Graduate and Ph.D humanities students from all over the world mostly fill the ranks of Fulbright scholars each year, but for the 2014-15 year the program is pushing for a greater number of applicants from scientific and engineering fields.
This year the program is making it easier for U.S. scientists within five years of earning a doctoral degree, and some early-career scientists, to obtain a Fulbright fellowship to conduct research abroad, according to Science. The Fulbright catalog this year lists engineering fellowships available in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, South America and elsewhere.

Typical summer jobs for student engineers may include coding software or testing products for large engineering firms. But many students use the summer to immerse themselves in something less expected. Here we feature student engineers writing for daily newspapers, helping construct particle physics equipment, and building eco-friendly, modern houses — just a few of many opportunities for students looking beyond the lab bench.

We’ve compiled a list of fellowships from websites of the California Institute of Technology, University of California at Berkeley, and a number of other organizations. All include engineering among applicable disciplines and apply to a wide range of applicants, majors, and career paths. (See the list under the cut).
The Accelerator keeps a longer list of fellowships with fall 2013 deadlines.
