The Theory and Practice of Motivating Students

In this paper, “A Primer for Engineering Teaching Assistants,” delivered at ASEE’s 2012 Conference in San Antonio, Ana T. Torres-Ayala, a doctoral candidate in higher education at the University of South Florida, and Geoffrey L. Herman, a postdoctoral researcher at the Illinois Foundry for Engineering Education, present the basics of motivation theories and how they can be used to inform and direct TAs work with engineering students.

Within engineering, job postings outnumbered the unemployed by 1.3 to one in electronic and electrical engineering and by more than three to one in indus­trial, health and safety engineering, reports Change the Equation, a nonprofit that promotes education in science, technology, engineering, and math. The group based its findings on an analysis of online job postings and unemployment data.

NASA Provides a Launch Pad for Student Experiments

For the second year, NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia is sending student experiments 98 miles into space as part of an educational project called RockSat-X, a joint effort between the space agency and the Colorado Space Grant Consortium. This year’s experiments were developed by teams from Baylor University and Virginia Tech, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of Puerto Rico.

Student Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED)

SPEED is a global, non-profit student organization that seeks to make an impact on engineering education and its effect on society and the environment. Promoting a system that is productive, inclusive, and forward-thinking, it provides a platform for global communication about engineering education among students as well as between students and other stakeholders. SPEED also strives to build a support network for students, empowering them to take action locally and globally in improving their educational environments.
