A record 25 student engineering teams designed, built and then raced hybrid and electric racecars in the April 29 – May 2 Formula Hybrid International Race, now in its sixth year. IEEE’s The Institute reported that teams from Brigham Young University and Universite de Sherbrooke, in Quebec, jointly won first place in the hybrid category. The Canadian team also won the Ford Efficiency Award for the best engineered and executed energy-efficient design.

A cohort default rate is the percentage of a school’s borrowers who enter repayment on certain loans during a federal fiscal year (October 1 to September 30) and default prior to the end of the next one to two fiscal years.

Full proposals are due September 12, 2012 for the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, which supports active research participation by undergraduate students in areas funded by NSF. The program aims to “involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.”
The U.S. Education Department has cut $10 million from the $46.2 million McNair Scholars program, which helps prepare college students from underrepresented minority groups for graduate school, Inside Higher Ed reports. The Council for Opportunity in Education estimates that about one-third of the McNair programs will lose their grants as a result.
A new federal program launched in July 2012, aims to “place a welcome sign on federal service for students and recent graduates,” according to John Berry, director of the Office of Personnel Management. The Government Executive publication reports that the program includes tracks for current students, recent graduates, and Presidential Management Fellows.
