VirginiaTechVirginia Tech Update

This year, Virginia Tech’s focus has been on directly serving their student chapter members. Their members are primarily Engineering Education Ph.D. students, many of whom are preparing to graduate within the next year or so. They have hosted two separate faculty panel events, one on preparing for the academic job search, and one on negotiating academic job contracts.

Their chapter also recently co-hosted a “Virtual Research Symposium” event, along with Georgia Tech’s student chapter. Students from Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech presented works-in-progress, while other students in attendance (including students from Clemson University) provided feedback. The entire event was done via WebEx, allowing students to participate from their home institutions. This was a great event that allowed students to get presentation experience, as well as feedback on ongoing research. This event also served as a networking event for their students, letting them meet and discuss research with students from other universities before they all attend the ASEE Annual Conference in Seattle this year.

ASEE would like to extend a big welcome to Syracuse University, the newest member of the Student Division. A few of their primary initiatives will include a summer journal club, a monthly seminar series, and creative skill building, as well as professional development opportunities such as a teaching “tricks of the trade” mixer and a teaching competition. They are hoping to provide a strong network and community for engineering education across all engineering and related disciplines within the University.
